A Revolutionary Theory

What makes an RPG an RPG? Well, RPG stands for role-playing game, meaning you take on the role of a character. Usually you manage stats, buy armor and fight monsters. So, is a game where you manage stats but don't buy armor or fight "monsters" still an RPG? Well, a select few gamers are trying to change everyone else's minds. They have been quietly contemplating a theory that will rock the foundation of gaming. Sports games are RPG's. This idea may seem radical but is it really? I mean, games like MLB baseball and the Madden series have many things in common with RPG's. Both genres offer in-depth customization and stat management. Think of a downed party member as an injured star pitcher. The monsters you fight are armed with bats or hockey sticks, not claws and magic. Critics will argue against this theory, arguing that the foundation of an RPG is the story, not customization. My view on the theory is split. Yes, there are definitely many similarities and could be considered RPG's in their simplest form. But I do not think that the similarities outweigh the differences. Sadly, I'm pretty sure we won't see these genres merge anytime soon. But, next time you're forced to pick between Madden 2006 and Catwoman at Blockbuster, remember this theory.
