Next Generation Prediction
This years E3 sure was interesting. With the three
biggest names in the industry unveiling what will be their ride into
the next generation. Gamers these days come to expect nothing but
brilliance when it comes to showing off a console. With each company
taunting the other, claiming there machine is far superior to the
other. This is why it is called the console wars; not the console
get-along ride.
Microsoft is jumping the gun this year with the Xbox 360. Microsoft is
trying to beat the competition by releasing their console on an
earlier date. But will the 360 turn out to be the Sega Dreamcast of
this generation? Sega released their last console very early compared
to Sony and Nintendo. And what a tragedy it was. The Dreamcast lived
an undesired short life. It's graphics couldn't compare to that of the
Playstation 2 or the Nintendo Gamecube. And so the Dreamcast faded out
of gamers homes. Will the Xbox 360 have the same fate? Many people
believe it's graphics won't be able to keep up with the Playstation 3
or the Revolution. And with the 360 coming out so early it only gives
Sony and Nintendo more time to make their consoles better.
Sony is taking their time with the PS3 just as they did with the PS2.
The PS3 will probably be the most powerful system of this generation.
But with great power comes very high prices. Sony is fighting to keep
the price of the PS3 from getting higher than $350. And with the
predicted price of games for the next generation ($70) we will have
homeless gamers running around. Say at the PS3 launch you buy the PS3
($350) and you decide to buy two games ($350+140). That means you are
going to pay a whopping $490 dollars for a console and two games.
We'll have to wait and see what Sony does about this problem.
And then there is Nintendo. Nintendo was very quiet about the features
of their next generation console. Only showing us the console, no
controller, and no game footage. Nintendo claims that that they do not
want other companies to copy their ideas. Nintendo has decided to go
down a different path though. Instead of making a very expensive super
machine, Nintendo has opted to make a console that is affordable and
convenient. Nintendo also announced free online gaming for both the
Revolution and the DS. Which console will people go for? Power?
Quality? We can only pray.
