Super Mario World Guide
A guide to finding all 96 exits and all the Dragon Coins
Part 1: World 1 Yoshi’s Island

Written by: Mr. X

I’d like to explain a few things before I begin. First of all, I am not explaining where every bonus area and underground full of coins is in this game. You have to find those for yourself. I am going to explain where all the level exits are and where all of the Dragon Coins are. If the exit is not hidden then you will not find in depth explanation on how to get it. Do I really need to tell you that to get to an exit in an easy level with no secrets you need to progress to the far end of the level? I don’t think so; it is unnecessary.

Remember, a level that has a yellow dot on the map is a level with only 1 exit. A level that has a red dot on the map has 2 exits. Even if one exit does not open up a new path you still need to clear it so it counts it in your game. All the Ghost Houses have 2 exits except for Vanilla Ghost House and Choco Ghost House. None of the Castles, Fortresses, or Switch Palaces has extra exits. I will now start you off with the first level: Yoshi’s Island 1.

One more note: There are no Dragon Coins in Castles, Fortresses, and Ghost Houses in the original SNES version of this game, but there are Dragon Coins in these levels in the GBA version. It doesn’t count if you collect every Dragon Coin in the SNES game but it does count it in the GBA game.

Yoshi’s Island 1:

This level is linear with one exit. There is no need for explanation on how to clear it.

Dragon Coins (coins with Yoshi’s face on them):

1st: Right near the beginning of the level there is a piece of land jutting out of the ground at an angle. Jump onto this and you’ll be able to grab the coin just passed the edge of the piece of land. Watch out for the Banzai Bill that will come at you.

2nd: After you pass the first green pipe that is coming out of the ground at an angle you will walk over a small plateau and come to 3 of those angled pieces of land coming out of the ground. The coin is in the air right after the third piece of land.

3rd: You need to have at least a Mushroom power-up to get to this next one. There will be a blue speaker box that, when hit, tells you how to do a spin jump. Right next to that will be a blue pipe that is covered by two yellow blocks. Do a spin jump and land on top of at least one of those blocks and enter the pipe. In the underground area, go to the second boxed in area with yellow blocks on top. You will see a Dragon Coin inside. Use the spin jump again to break through those blocks and grab the coin.

4th: Not long after the halfway gate you will come to a spot with 3 platforms; each one raising higher then the next. The third and tallest one will have a ramp leading down the backside. Jump up to the top of this third platform and grab the coin sitting just above it.

5th: Just before the end of the level you will come to a green pipe with raised land on the other side. The coin is sitting in plain sight right after this pipe.

Yellow Switch Palace:

This level is unlocked after you beat Yoshi’s Island 1. There are no Dragon Coins and the level is extremely short and linear. Just get to the end and hit the large yellow switch to turn all the empty squares with yellow dotted lines into yellow exclamation blocks. These all contain Mushrooms, no matter if Mario has a cape or firepower already. These blocks may help you get to secret level exits later in the game, or be that emergency mushroom you need.

Yoshi’s Island 2:

This level is linear with one exit. There is no need for explanation on how to clear it.

NOTE: The fourth item block in this level contains a Yoshi Egg. This is the first time Yoshi is introduced into the game.

Dragon Coins:

1st: Right after the Speaker Box, which again tells you how to do a spin jump (that is how you get off of Yoshi’s back), there will be four coins and the Dragon Coin will be sitting in the middle of them.

2nd: The second one is right after the first, sitting in the air in plain sight.

3rd: You will come to a small plateau where a Chargin’ Chuck will run at you. At the edge of it you will see two coins leading up to the Dragon Coin.

4th: You will pass the halfway gate and two yellow pipes (one taller than the other). You will then see three platforms (two small and one large). The two small ones are on each side of the large one and overlap it slightly. There are two yellow blocks above the 3rd platform. Hit the second block to reveal a vine. Jump onto the vine and climb up (if you still have Yoshi, you can spin jump to get off of him, this is what you must do to climb the vine. Jump back on him once you get the coin). Once you get to the top you will see a platform made up of little clouds. The Dragon Coin is above it. Get on the platform and jump to grab the coin.

5th: Not long after the 4th coin you will come to another platform. The Dragon Coin is above this in a row of regular coins.

Yoshi’s Island 3:

This level is linear with one exit. There is no need for explanation on how to clear it.

Dragon Coins:

1st: There are two yellow platforms that stretch in and out. Right after those is the first Dragon Coin sitting in the air.

2nd: You will pass a block with a Yoshi egg in it (or a 1-up mushroom if you already have Yoshi). When you come to the next set of rotating wooden platforms you will jump downward onto some yellow exclamation blocks below (you can’t see them until you start to fall down). There will be a yellow pipe. Enter the pipe and hit the ‘P’ Switch. The switch will turn a line of coins into brown blocks. Hurry across to find the Dragon Coin at the end.

3rd: Right after the halfway mark you will see the 3rd Dragon Coin next to a speaker box.

4th: You will come to another set of platforms that stretch in and out, but this time they will also stretch up and down. The coin is in between the last two of these platforms.

5th: Just before the end of the level you will find yourself on a spinning wooden platform. You will jump onto the land (with the sign with the pink/red arrow on it) grabbing the last Dragon Coin as you jump the gap.

Yoshi’s Island 4:

This level is linear with one exit. There is no need for explanation on how to clear it.

Dragon Coins:

1st: At the end of the platform that you start on you will see the Dragon Coin sitting just above a small floating island.

2nd: Not far after the first coin you will see a second floating island. The Dragon Coin is high above this, but still on screen.

3rd: You will see a blue pipe in which you will just pass by (although you are able to enter it). There will be two floating islands not far after this and the coin is at jumping height above the second one.

4th: Right after the 3rd Dragon Coin you will see a blue “P” Switch sitting on a yellow block above. Throw a Koopa Shell up at the block or find a way to jump and hit it and hit the switch. Progress past the green pipe and you will see a row of brown blocks that were transformed from coins. The Dragon Coin is right on top of these.

5th: You will cross a series of floating islands after the 4th coin and will come to a platform where the 5th coin is in plain sight with two coins on either side.

Castle No. 1 – Iggy’s Castle

This level is linear with only one exit. There is, however, some new things you see. One thing you will notice at every Castle, Fortress, and Ghost House: Yoshi is left behind (don’t worry, you’ll get him back at the end of the level). You will notice that there are sets of what looks like giant chain link fences. You are able to grab onto these like you would a vine, except here you can move side to side as well as up and down. There are small gateways that you can pound on to switch to the opposite side. Watch out for the Koopas!

Beating Iggy Koopa: He is very simple. The platform he is on is tilting back and forth. Wait until the side he is standing on is tilted closest to the lava. Jump on his head until he is knocked into the lava. Remember, whether you jump on his head or hit him with a fireball, he will always slide in the direction that the platform is tilted. Watch out, he will pull orange balls out of his shell and throw them at you.

Dragon Coins:

1st: You will be on the second big fence thing. You will have just passed by a row of five item blocks and you will see it sitting up the fence a little ways. It’s in plain sight.

2nd: You will see this just after the second coin, as you are crossing over the lava. You will notice that Mario does not grab it. It is behind the fence. Progress forward a little bit more and you will see a square outlined in the fence. Tap this and Mario will spin to the other side. Go back to where the coin was and grab it.

3rd: You will see the 3rd coin right after the next gap in the fence. You will notice that this is also behind the fence. The gate is right near the coin this time. Go through and collect it.

4th: You will have entered the tan colored door into the room with the scrolling screen. The fourth coin is right above the first dip in the floor. After getting the coin, you should stay in this dip and duck to protect yourself from the crusher that will come down.

5th: You will see a yellow platform that expands in and out over a gap. The coin is above this platform. Watch out, this is a spot that a crusher comes down on you.

Congratulations! You have completed World 1. The rest of the game won’t be so easy.
