Game Name:
Metroid Prime Pinball
System: Nintendo DS
Genre: Pinball
Developer: Fuse Games
Publisher: Nintendo
Release Dates:
United States: October 24th, 2005
Japan: January 19th, 2006 |
Introduction:
I must admit that I myself was at first doubtful of MPP's success.
Why not just make a first person shooter Metroid game for the DS?
Thankfully, the creators of the game new just what they were doing.
I was awe-struck at how well the elements of the Metroid Prime
universe blended with pinball. Weapons and new powerups are at
Samus's disposal as she rolls, bumps, and crashes her way in
morphball form through 6 areas based on the hit for the Gamecube,
Metroid Prime. Old enemies rear their ugly heads, and unforgettable
bosses return to try to destroy Samus.
Story:
There is really no story to MPP, which is just how a great pinball
game should be. Though you still must defeat Metroid Prime in the
final area (like in MP), a written story is absent from MPP.
Gameplay:
Gameplay on MPP is as fun as it is addictive. Smooth and easy to use
controls make MPP a true joy to play. Missions and boss battles are
well-thought out, and are easy to get the hang of.
I give the gameplay: 9/10
Graphics:
MPP pushes the DS's limits on graphics. Beautifully detailed worlds
and stunning bosses show what the Nintendo DS is truly capable of.
Don't spend your time staring at the lush surroundings of Tallon
overworld or the cavernous environment of Phazon Mines, or Samus
will be dead before you know it.
I give the graphics: 9/10
Sound:
Music from MP plays well on the DS, but sound effects could have
been a little better. The voiceover of Samus's suit was done very
well.
I give the sound: 8/10
Replayability:
As with most pinball games, MPP's replay value is high. This is the
type of game that you can always come back to if you feel up for a
challenge. Also, if you've got friends, multiplayer on MPP is good
fun, and will really test you pinball skills in the inferno that is
Magmoor Caverns.
I give the replayability: 10/10
Challenge:
With so many games out today with just fun gameplay and lots of
eye-candy, it's nice to see that MPP poses a tough challenge, even
for the most skilled of pinball players (cough... me... cough...).
Plus, once you've beaten the game, you can challenge yourself
further in expert mode. That should keep you busy for a while.
I give the challenge: 9/10
Frustration:
With smooth controls, lush environments, and epic boss battles, what
is there to be frustrated about? If you're a little impatient, you
might get frustrated if the ball doesn't roll the way you want.
I give the frustration: 0/10
Value:
Though the game is short, its value is great. If you can
beat games pretty quickly, you might want to wait until the price
goes down.
Overall:
MPP delivers what hardcore pinball, Metroid fans, and even those new
to both want. The only true flaw of MPP is that it is too short for
hardcore gamers. For the rest of us though, buying MPP is a must.
I give Metroid Prime Pinball: 9/10
Conclusion:
The risky strategy of combining Metroid Prime and pinball paid off
big. The DS's double screens allow for an even larger pinball area,
greatly improving its uh... greatness. My recommendation: If you
have the money, buy this game NOW!!!!!!
