Game Name:
New Super Mario Bros.
System: Nintendo DS
Genre: Action / Platformer
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Release Dates:
United States: May 15th, 2006
Japan: May 25th, 2006
Europe: June 30th, 2006 |
Introduction:
In this year of 2006, we really don't see many 2D sidestep games. If
we do, they are usually just remakes. Although the remakes are fun,
we have been in need of a great new sidestep game. New Super Mario
Bros. is an instant classic.
Story:
The story will take you way back to the stories of the NES and
SNES. The only story here is that the princess has been captured by
Bowser Jr., and Mario needs to rescue her by jumping on goombas and
dashing to the end of each level.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is excellent. It is just like the old games, but it
doesn't make you sit there and think "I've done this before". Every
level is unique, although short. Whether the level be underwater, in
the sky, or in a castle, they are all fun and full of secrets. You
can also collect star coins that open up new paths in each world.
I give the gameplay: 9.5/10
Graphics:
The graphics are very cool looking. Much of the background is 2D,
but its very smooth and fits in with all the 3D characters. It is
one of the smoothest looking games on the DS. Although the a lot is
2D, there are many graphical effects that look very neat.
I give the graphics: 9/10
Sound:
When it comes to mario games, you expect the traditional music that
you will always find yourself humming. This game is the perfect
blend of new and old music. Many of the songs will remind you of
traditional music, but also sounds fresh and new.
I give the sound: 9/10
Replayability:
The replayability factor is good. It isn't great because once you
figure everything out, its not hard to forget. It can also get
repetitive sometimes, but it isn't too big of a deal.
I give the replayability: 7.5/10
Challenge:
This game is not much of a challenge. You may find it challenging
if your a bit rusty on the traditional sidestep adventure, but its
pretty easy to figure out. Some levels may leave you puzzled, but
there is nothing that you cant figure out on your own.
I give the challenge: 7/10
Frustration:
Some levels may leave you very frustrated, but not too bad, but you
wont be left furious, making it a good rating.
I give the frustration: 8/10
Value:
This game is definitely worth the 35 bucks. You may
finish it quickly, but with many secrets, its always fun to go back
and search for all 240 star coins in each of the 80 levels.
I give the value: 9/10
Overall:
Overall, this game is excellent. With 80 levels, 8 worlds (2 of
which require something a little extra to get to) and plenty of
other secrets, this game deserves a high grade.
I give New Super Mario Bros.: 9/10
Conclusion:
As I said above in "overall", this game has a lot. The one problem
is lame boss battles, but this doesn't affect the gameplay much at
all. This game is a must have for your DS.
