Its a pretty good gameboy game and made an excellent GB launch title. When the GB needed more titles for launch, it was Mario to the rescue. Its obviously not Miyamoto's work but its good enough. Gunpei Yokoi designed this game instead. He is (well was....I'm not touching this anymore) the creator of Metroid and Kid Icarus and was also a lead designer at Nintendo. I have to say, for a Mario game unsupervised by Miyamoto, the game is very well done. Of course, if it was made by Miyamoto, this would probably be his weakest work .

Its classic gameplay rolled into a tiny cartridge. The setting may not fit the game too well but the gameplay is still great. It plays a lot like Super Mario Bros. The screen scrolls to the right but you can't go back. Sound familiar? You bet it is. This game is pure classic gameplay and it preserves the spirit of the original game. In fact, its so much like SMB that some purists consider it the true American Sequel to SMB.
Graphics are laughable, even for a gameboy game. Sprites are simplistic, enemies are tiny, and the levels don't fit Mario too well. And seeing how far the next two Super Mario Land games went, there is no excuse for how simplistic everything looks in the original game. The music is much better and very catchy. Who could forget World One's theme? And in the Marine-Pop and Sky-Pop levels, the SMB theme is remixed . Yay for remixing everyone's favorite videogame song!

Super Mario Land is a short game. And its also hard to find. I got lucky when I stumbled on it at Gamestop. There are only 4 worlds in the game but it has a hard mode when you done. And the last level is so much fun that its worth going through the game all over again. It takes less than an hour to beat but its meant to be an on the go game. So when you have to go somewhere, its a perfect plug in and play game for trips. Super Mario Land was the start of something great. The Next Super Mario Land game and the Wario Land games are sequels to this game. Nice introduction, wouldn't you say?
