Introduction:
After Super Metroid, the series was sort of put on hold for awhile.
With no game appearing on the N64, people worried about Metroid. They
wouldn't have to worry long though, because on the Gamecube Samus
returned, in 3D for the first time. Metroid Prime it was called.
Little did people know how incredibly awesome 3D Metroid could be, and
this proved it could be. The first game of the Metroid Prime Trilogy,
this one is the best Metroid game ever, and one of the best games of
this generation.
Story:
At the beginning of Metroid Prime, Samus lands on a Space Station
orbiting the planet Tallon IV. As she moves around it and at the end
leaves it, Meta Ridley flies down to the planet itself. Hopping in her
spaceship, Samus follows down to the Tallon IV overworld.
Although the story isn't too apparent in the beginning, after scanning
many things you learn of how Space Pirates are using the chemical
Phazon to energize Metroids for there own use. Samus embarks on a long
quest on Tallon IV, to find Meta Ridley and stop the Space Pirates. As
she travels, she encounters a bigger problem: The metroids themselves,
and a huge one known as Metroid Prime, a huge and extremely powerful
Metroid
Gameplay:
The gameplay is what makes Metroid Prime so awesome. It plays a
HUGE part in why it is so loved. It feels so much like the old
Metroids, but so new too. It is an FPS, so you'll be looking out a
helmet with your power beam bouncing up and down. You can also morph
into your morph ball, where it gets more of a platformer feeling. You
have a arsenal of many different weapons, The Power Beam, the Wave
Beam, the Ice Beam, the Plasma Beam, Missiles, and a Missile combo
with each beam. Shooting isn't the only thing you will do though, your
Visors are also very important. You will change from the "Combat
Visor" to a "Scan Visor" a lot to scan things and learn more about
them. Also brand new is a Thermal Visor and X ray Visor, which well
help a lot. The enemies are all pretty unique and you need to use
different strategies against them, from simply shooting them to
getting eaten by them and laying a bomb. Overall the gameplay is just
simply astounding. I see no way to improve it
I give the gameplay: 10/10
Graphics:
When you land on Tallon IV, especially if you got this when it
first came out I would guess, you probably will be like "wow". The
graphics in this game are amazing. Simply astonishing , a huge leap
from Super Metroid. (16 bit to 128 bit IS huge after all). Each
environment, from the fire area to the ice area are very memorable.
The enemies look detailed, the special effects are cool looking, and
the different visors are very detailed. These are just great graphics
I give the graphics: 10/10
Sound:
The sounds is pretty dang good. I like some of the music,
especially the Magmoor Caverns. To give it a 10 out of 10 comparing it
to the past 2 categories wouldn't be right though, so a 9/10 is fair
I give the sound: 9/10
Replayability:
Metroid Prime is very replayable, as are all the
metroids. You'll probably want to play this a few more times after you
beat it
I give the replayability: 8/10
Challenge:
The challenge is where it lacks a bit I suppose. Sure it is
difficult at times, but nothing too bad. Except for that final boss...
I give the challenge: 6/10
Frustration:
You can get a bit frustrated looking for some of the things at the
end, but its not a big problem
I give the challenge: 2/10
Value:
$50 for this? Thats just perfect.
I give the value: 10/10
Overall:
Overall Metroid Prime is a must play for Metroid, Nintendo, or FPS
fans. It is very unique and is one of the best games of this
generation. The second game is great too, and I imagine the third will
be also.
I give Metroid Prime:
9.8/10
Conclusion:
Metroid Prime rules. That is all that needs to be said
