  Game Name:
Mario Golf
System:
Game Boy Color
Genre:
Sports / Golf / RPG
Developer:
Camelot
Publisher:
Nintendo
Release Date:
Japan: August 10th, 1999
United States: October 5th, 1999
Europe: November 4th, 1999

Introduction:

Whew! I don't know why, but I've writing a LOT of reviews lately and this will probably be my last for a little bit. I really love writing these!! Today's review is: Mario golf for GBC. Unlike MG for N64, it's an RPG.

Here we gooo!!!! (in a Mario voice)

Story:

Your goal: to become grand champ. How do you achieve this? You must win all 4 tournaments: Marion, Palm, Dune and Links. You must also beat all 4 club champs in Match games. I'll tell you about them later. While you're on this quest, you must build your characters stats from distance, trajectory, control, and meet area.

Gameplay:

1llll-llll-llll-llll2-lllll

That's what the swing meter looks like. If you want a MAX power shot, press A to start a bar going left, and make it stop RIGHT on 1. If done correctly, you'll here a "ding" sound. That means you got full power on your shot. But that's only half of the swing. Next, another bar will start from 1 going right. ALWAYS NO MATTER WHAT MAKE IT STOP ON 2!! Why? Because that part is control. If it stops right on 2, you'll hit it right where you aimed to to go. Well, it least in line where it was going to go if you had full power. But beware! If you land in the rough, deep rough, sand, or heath, your ball won't go as far. If you want to take something off your shot, press A somewhere before 1. The farther you are away, the weaker the shot! Same goes for putting, only you do the power part. Watch out for the lines on the green that make the ball break!
'One more thing, the wind effects your shot. So if you hit a perfect shot, but it ended up a little off, it's because of the wind.

You get 6 power shots per round. To use one, press B before the swing the swing meter to make it red. If you hit a perfect power shot, you won't lose one.

And that's all there is to it!

I give the gameplay: 10/10

Graphics:

Nintendo has put a new feature in this game: 3-D mode. During your swing, it will zoom behind the golfer and it will look 3-D! But everything else in the game is average.

I give the graphics: 8/10

Sound:

Unique music. Each club champ has their own match game music. Tiny's and Gene Yuss's music is the coolest. I've actually put headphones in the GB and just listen to that music and not play it's that good! Everything else is cartoon like sfx, but, like I have said before, it fits Mario games perfectly.

I give the sound: 9/10

Replayability:

Since it's in RPG, the replay value isn't anything to brag about, but just playing rounds, and matches over again is really fun and never gets boring!

Challenge:

Pretty easy, actually. It doesn't take me a day to beat this game! But building your golfer's stats higher and higher until you reach the max level is the real challenge.

I give the challenge: 8/10

Frustration:

Not really that much.

I give the frustration: 5/10

Value:

NEVER  seen it for sale anywhere! How weird. I got mine for like $20 bucks 7 years ago!

I give the value: ?/?

The Rivals:

I'll tell you about them now:

Putts
Marion champ
Drive: 200 yds
Shot: draw

A pushover. If you can't beat this dude, you need more practice. He always gets -1 so he should be no problem. He also has the worse drive in the game! Also the worst putter.

Grace
Palm champ
Drive: 220yds
Shot: Straight

Another pushover. But beware! If you play at Palm club, she always gets at least 1 hole-in-one! She's always gets a score of -3 which isn't that hard to beat. But still, she's harder that Putts. She's also a horrid putter just like  Putts.

Tiny
Dune champ
Drive: 250 yds
Shot: Draw

Nothing Tiny about this dude. Or how many he's gets under par. Which is -7. A HUGE improvement from the previous champs. Especially his drive. The best mid distance (100-175 yds) shooter in the game. If you can't beat him, don't worry. Practice makes perfect! Your also probably not going to win any driving contests. He's also a great putter!

Gene Yuss
Links champ
Drive: 240 yds
Shot: Fade

The hardest rival of all! Always gets -9 and has the best putting and the best control. A real toughie. It must be that full brim hat he's. But really. What's up with wearing purple? Anyways, always gets a hole-in-one at Links club and has a decent drive. It might take a couple of times to beat him.

I give the rivals: 10/10

Overall:

A great golf game with realistic dynamics with a cartoony twist. Even if you don't like Golf, this game is awesome!!

I give Mario Golf: 9/10

Conclusion:

So, that's the end of my reviews for a while. But don't you worry! TM is return!
