Game Name:
Gex 64: Enter the Gecko
System:
N64
Genre:
Action
Players:
1
Developer:
Crystal Dynamics
Publisher:
Midway
Release Date:
United States: August 1st, 1998 |
Introduction:
Man, it feels good to be writing reviews again. Next in line is the
game, Gex: Enter the Gecko. I game thati s very hard, and very
cartoon-like. It also has many T.V channel references in this game and
some of Gex's quotes rfer to some celebraty, or movie. Very cool
indeed. Let's get it started!
"A little tongue now, a lotta tail later"
Story:
Gex is the main character that is completely absessed with
Television. Then, Megazord or some robot dude comes and steals all the
channels. Now, I don't know how you can do such a thing, but Megazord
did. So, Gex goes out to find all the Remotes to bring back the T.V
channels and defeat all of Megazords big enemies (aka bosses) and
MegaZord himself to bring T.V. back once again.
Gameplay:
Simple: A to jump, B for a tail whip (attack) R for tongue whip,
which is for getting the fireflies that give you health, extra lives,
and special items. They come out of little T.V's that you must hit.
Control stick to move around. Also, you can perform a double jump by
doing a regular jump and right when you hit the ground, press A again
to do a Spring jump. You can do this as many times in-a-row as you
want.
The Main items are Red, Silver and Gold remotes. Red Remotes open new
levels, Silver Remotes open bonus levels with a Gold remote in it, and
Gold remotes open gates in the main "area" which lead to new levels.
But wait! You may get to big T.Vs. (which is where you enter levels,)
but it may look all black and white. This is because you haven't
gotten enough Red remotes. Each level contains 1-3 Red remotes, and 2
Silver remotes. YOu get Gold ones in Bonus T.V's (aka bonus levels).
In order to get Red remotes, you must do certain tasks in the levels
like beat a boss, find the Red remote somewhere in the level (like if
the task says this: Get the the top of the mountain, the remote would
be there) Sliver remotes are hidden deep within a level and the game
gives you no clues to where it is like they do with the red ones. You
must find it yourself!
One more thing: Some bonus levels may be that you have to beat a boss.
If you beat him, you get a gold remote. Other bnous levels may require
you to find all the little "tokens" (like bananas in Donkey Kong
Country) within a certain amount of time.
The gameplay is a good mix up to what people are used to using. Very
creative.
I give the gameplay: 8/10
Graphics:
Typical N64 graphics is all I can say. The camera can sometimes be
hard to control, though. But everything else is typical. But N64 games
DO have good graphics.
I give the graphics: 7/10
Sound:
Awesome. Intense. I love how Gex says quote that refer to the level
you're in. Example: When you're when the prehistoric volcano levels,
Gex will sometimes say "Goddnes gracious, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE and say
it just like the singer in the song says it! Also, in the China
levels, Sometimes he'll say "Is this the year of the Gecko?" He says
things like that that give the game it's comicial kick. There's not
much music that stands out in this game, but I do like the main "area"
music. It goes like that music you hear at Collage football games.
da da daaaaaaaaaaaaa DA!! da da daaaaaaaaaa DA! That is just too cool!
I give the sound: 9/10
Replayability:
The only way to replay this game is to find all the Remotes again
and beat all the bosses again. Which is easier the second time because
you actaully SORTA know where SOME of the remotes are. But it has an
ok replayability.
I give the replayability: 6/10
Challenge:
The first time through is extremely hard because you don't have a
clue where anything is except for the enemies. (that's funny, see). I
will take a while to get familer with the game, but you'll get it
evenually.
I give the challenge:
10/10
Frustration:
You get 4 hit and you're dead. But it's pretty easy to avoid
enemies and very easy to defeat them. The only frustrating part is
fighting the bosses which is pretty hard.
I give the frustration: 8/10
Value:
6-10 bucks is an awesome deal on this game.
I give the value: 9/10
Gex Quotes:
They are awesome! Here's list of some:
Hug my tongue, darling.
Lickin my way to the top!
Is this the year of the Gecko?
Harvard, Bill and Molly! On a routine expedition.
Look, I just wanted the gift shop in the bathroom.
Hey! I feel like I'm trapped in Boy george's pants!
Reminds me of Halloween at Rip Taylor's!
I give the gex quotes: 90/90
Overall:
Overall, this is a fun game with cartoony style and sound Fx, but
it lack s the spice that Nintendo games have. Midway, I guess, is a
Nintendo wanna-be. But it IS a great game with a good challenge.
I give Gex 64: Enter the Gecko: 7/10
Conclusion:
This concludes a Tanooki Mario review. There will be more to come
soon!
