Perfect is the only word to describe this game, its that good. This
is a First Person Shooter at its best. It's got everything you could
possibly want from a game. To get an idea of what Perfect Dark (PD) is
like, combine Goldeneye, Half Life, Splinter Cell, and Metal Gear
Solid together. Now throw in some of its own elements and you have
Perfect Dark. Now let me get this clear, THAT is just plain awesome.
Everything else just adds to the game. The sound and graphics
department is through the roof for a Nintendo 64 game. Who would have
guessed that the old thing could push things like this? But what about
the gameplay? PD perfects that too.
As I said, PD is like a mix of a lot of different spy and spy-like
games. And that is a good thing. The missions are very Goldeneye-ish,
and the player will be able to tell that it was clearly a sequel. When
Goldeneye, a very nearly Perfect game itself is polished to
perfection, no game can even come close to the quality delivered in
the gameplay. And PD is what that is for the most part. Goldeneye's
difficulty modes seemed a bit rushed seeing how you could access the
un-necessary objectives when you didn't have to. But in PD, the level
design is limited depending on the difficulty setting. This allows for
some great level design in the game. The missions are very fun, and
you will spend a long time on regular Agent mode alone. The next two
difficulties are Special Agent, and Perfect Agent. On these modes, you
are given even more objectives and the AI becomes much smarter. Anyone
familiar with Goldeneye will feel right at home with this game. The
gameplay is so polished that it makes all other FPS games feel
underwhelming. Let me get this strait right now: PD has 30 different
weapons and the environments always have variety in them. The gameplay
tweaks from Goldeneye may seem minor at first but when you really pay
attention the game, it absolutely destroys Goldeneye.
The only thing I can say for both graphics and sound is wow. Its hard
to believe that this game came out on Nintendo 64. THIS is the N64
when pushed to its limits. Every texture is detailed, every room has
lighting effects, and all the enemies are fluid in motion and are
detailed. Even though the graphics may be aging today, they still seem
very detailed. When on High Resolution mode, the game could qualify
for a first generation Dreamcast game. However the framerate has a few
issues in High Res. Speaking of the framerate, there are a few areas
where it slows down. However this usually only happens when several
people are playing in multiplayer mode, and its not 100% unplayable.
Never less, the graphics still stand out for N64. The sound is just as
good and maybe even better by a little bit. The game is filled with
speech, and the voice acting is very well done. Who wouldn't love
Joanna's British accent? Sound effects sound crisp and clear. Gun
shots sound realistic (and are varied), guards scream realistically
when shot, and best of all, every sound effect sound unique. But the
sound effects aren't alone for perfection. The music is really, really
well done. Who could forget Chicago Stealth's music, or the music
playing on the menus? The music is some of the best MIDI music ever
made. Right when you start the game, you know right away that the
music will be nothing short of spectacular.
I won't talk about the game's story, its pretty whacked but it just
adds to the perfection. There really isn't much flaw in Perfect Dark.
In fact, there is so little flaw in the game that it really could be
considered perfect. Even a really picky person couldn't deny that this
is one of the best titles on Nintendo 64. Its really fun, really
tough, madly addictive (I haven't even finished yet!), has a lot of
cool cheats (fun stuff as well as cheater's stuff), is presented well,
and most importantly, feels like a Goldeneye Sequel. If you liked
Goldeneye, you will fall in love with this game. To keep it short and
Simple, Perfect Dark is a Perfect Game. This is probably the only game
I will ever give an A++ to.
