  Game Name: Star Fox 64
System: Nintendo 64
Genre: Action/Flight Shooter
Developer/Publisher: Nintendo
Release Date:
Japan: April 27th, 1997
United States: June 1st, 1997
Europe: October 6th, 1997
Players: 4

Introduction:

Starfox 64 is a remake of the obsolete original version, StarFox for SNES. I'm writing this because it's such a great game from Nintendo that I can't believe that nobody has written a review for it already!

Story:

You play as Fox, the leader of the Starfox team who patrols the Lylat System in space. You and your team-mates, Falco, Slippy, and Peppy must go out on a space adventure to defeat Andross, an evil scientist because he wants to take over the Lylat System, and because he killed Fox's father, James McLoud.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is simple. You fly around in your Arwing (kinda like an X-wing from StarWars) killing enemies through different levels. The great thing about the gameplay is that you can change your route in space by doing different things in some levels. Example: In Sector X, you must defeat the boss before Slippy gets shot down and lands in Titania. In other words, if you beat it fast enough, you go to Solar. If not, you go to Titania. Your Arwing shoots lasers, double lasers with the right power-ups and and hold up to 9 bombs. Your ship  can also Barrel roll, boost, brake, somersault. and U-turn (only in all-range mode.) The further you get in the game, the harder it gets. There are more enemies, obstacles, and less power-ups. There are actually around 15-20 levels. But which ones you go to depends on your route throughout the game.

I give the gameplay: 10/10

Graphics:

The graphic are what you would expect from an N64 game. Only a bit better. When your Arwing flies, shoots, etc it's looks pretty good. But when you beat the boss at the end of each level, the giant explosion looks fake, and is the same for every single boss. But other than that, this game has great graphics for an N64.

I give the graphics: 8/10

Sound:

This game is where Nintendo shows off its videogame sound. While you go through levels, your team-mates have conversations. TONS of conversations! They speak very clearly and are sometimes humorous. While flying and shooting lasers, the sound is excellent. Even the music in this game is great. Especially that catchy theme song. The only downfall in the sound is when you shoot an enemy and it explodes, and when the boss explodes. It sounds so fake, it's like it came out of an SNES game or something.

I give the sound: 97/100

Replayability:

You could play this game over and over again and never get tired of it! What makes it so addictive is that you play about 1/3 of the levels each time you go through. Plus, this game is a high score game. So, you want to get a higher score every time! Or maybe the reason is that this game is so dang fun, you love hearing your team-mates talk and you just have to get all the medals in all the levels! To get medals, you have to kill a certain number of enemies in each level. After you get all medals, it goes into expert mode, and makes getting the medals a LOT harder!

I give the replayability: 10/10

Challenge:

To tell you the truth, I've never gotten a single medal in expert mode, but all in regular mode. Why? Because it's harder than mixing water and oil! It takes serious skill to beat just regular all the way through! Getting all the medals I mean. And it's still hard enough the just beat the game! But if the play the game enough and have good reflexes, you should do very good at this game.

I give the challenge: 10/10

Frustration:

Not much of a frustrating game. But it is if your fighting Andross, have 1 life left, and your one shot away from beating him, and he kills you, THEN it's frustrating. But other than dying in crucial situations, it's not very frustrating for me that is. Maybe for other people.

I give the frustration: 4/10

Value:

Well, I got lucky when I bought my copy. I got it for $2 at a consignment sell! But I've seen it on sell at game stores for like, $15-20. Which is pretty good for a Nintendo game that's very popular.

I give the value: 9/10

Overall:

This game just so fun with great graphic and sound. It's also a pretty hard game. In other words, if you don't have this game I highly recommend you buy it.

I give Star Fox 64: 9/10

Conclusion:

So, that's my Starfox review. Email me if you have any questions. Once you play this game, you'll get hooked.

Remember, when life fires bullets at you, do a barrel roll!
