Yes, this is a review of that awful game. In fact, its so bad that I
won't even make this review very long. Let me get this strait right
now; this is the worst game on the Nintendo 64. There are so many
flaws and bugs in the game that you have to play it to believe it. Mix
in some simplistic missions with terrible controls and programming and
you will get a good idea of what its like to play this game. Its not
the worst game ever but its one of them. If not, its one of the worst
licensed titles ever. Just play the game for 10 minutes and you will
realize that it doesn't get better one bit. The game could have been
at least decent but the end result is disastrous.
Let me start with the biggest issue in the game: The controls. It
might have been better if the controls weren't so unresponsive! And
even if they were responsive, the animation is so choppy that it would
still be easy to screw up. But seeing that the controls are
unresponsive anyways, there really isn't any point to this game. But
lets assume for a minute that the controls were fine and the graphics
weren't choppy. Well, then the game would have been better but it
would still have been boring. The game would have been easy instead.
The missions mainly consist of timed goals such as saving innocents
from harm, pushing buttons, getting from one area to the next. Its
pretty clichéd, and the broken controls just make everything
frustrating. And don't even make me get started on the Rings. Why the
heck does Superman have to fly through rings anyways? To save his
friends? Okay, this makes NO sense. In fact, if you pay attention to
the awful story in the game, you would find out that it makes even
less sense.
Sound and graphics aren't as bad as the gameplay but are still
mediocre. The music is repetitive and the sound effects are
simplistic. Most of the buildings don't look too bad but the city is
covered in a thick (Kryptonite) fog (yeah right) that severely limits
your visibility. Plus a lot of missions require you to walk over some
flat textures (that look like buildings from above) and it looks
really dumb. Its a blocky mess. The indoor environments aren't too bad
but there a lot of clipping issues in them. Add these issues in with
an outdated and constantly jumpy framerate and you have an unplayable
piece of trash.
I could go on about this game but I won't. Let me make it loud and
clear here: This game feels rushed, unpolished, and unplayable. How
Titus screwed up this bad is beyond me. The game could have very
easily been one of the best superhero games created. Titus went
bankrupt a few years ago (big surprise) after releasing a crappy Top
Gun game. Thats the end of that, and the end of what could have had
(crappy) sequels. In Gamespy's top ten most shameful games, they said
"Superman traveled faster than a speeding Bullet! Into the garbage
cans of Nintendo 64 owners everywhere!"
