  Game Name:
Adventures of Lolo
System:
NES
Genre:
Puzzle
Players:
1
Developer:
HAL
Publisher:
HAL
Release Date:
Japan: August 9th, 1988
United States: April, 1989

Introduction:

Most of you should know this game by now, for Nintendo City has a whole shrine dedicated to it, but I'll tell you about Adventures of Lolo

Story:

The story is really simple.  The Great Devil's Empire fell from the sky, they captured Lala, so Lolo made them die!  Don't worry, I won't do annoying rhymes anymore, just for now.  If you couldn't catch on to that poetic sentence, Iet me put it this way: Prince Lolo saves Princess Lala.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is awesome.  You must complete 50 mind-bending puzzles and then face off with The Great Devil.  Okay, you don't really fight The Great Devil, but anyways.  The puzzles have an overhead view, and they are really fun.  You have to collect the all the heart frames, and some heart frames will let you have power shots.  You can use Power Shots for trapping your enemies in bubbles, and then you shoot them again into the water (or offscreen) before they hatch.  This takes some strategy, and you have to use more strategy as you push blocks to collect stuff, dodging enemy attacks and using your collected items wisely.  Once you have collected all of the heart frames, a treasure chest opens, revealing a pearl.  Get it, and all the enemies die and you can advance to the next room.

I give the gameplay: 10/10

Graphics:

Wow, the graphics are pretty detailed for 1989.  (For those who have not seen other 1989 graphics, go play A Boy and his Blob.)  Lolo has a bald shine and other things don't look pixelated at all.  Heck, the graphics are so good they compare to the SNES.  Okay, they aren't that good, but they are still are fancy for the time, and I must admit that the ending "fight" scene was pretty sprite-filled and detailed, making it dang awesome.

I give the graphics: 9/10

Sound:

The Sound is okay, but there isn't very much of it, but I must admit that the level music is beyond catchy.

I give the sound: 7/10

Replayability:

The replayability STINKS!!!  But you would expect that for a puzzle game, because you already know what to do.

I give the replayability: 2/10

Challenge:

It's quite challenging.  Don't be fooled that the characters look babyish, this is definitely not a kid's game.  No, it's definitely appropriate, it's just that very few kids could actually get to Floor 2 (and there's 5 puzzles per floor,) so it's good for teenagers and adults to aim for the goal.

I give the challenge: 10/10

Frustration:

You can get quite frustrated it times, but it's not throw your controller at the wall frustration, it's the usual frustration you get from a puzzle game.

I give the frustration: 7/10

Value:

You get a fair amount of value in this game.  Each puzzle takes you a quite some an amount of minutes  minutes complete, so you get a few hours killed with this game.

I give the value: 8/10

Control:

The control is pretty good.  Lolo goes fast and will respond easily to what you press.

I give the control: 8/10

Simplicity:

I know you wouldn't qualify this as a category, but this game has to have this category in every review.  A Power Shots, and you also use it to use an item.  B lets you switch through your items, and select restarts the puzzle.  There isn't any button combinations, moves or weird settings, or any of that crap.  It's the simplicity that we all need.

I give the simplicity: 10/10

Creativity:

Oh, there is a lot of creativity to this game.  Name a game where you play as a blue puffball saving a pink puffball from a demon that looks like a toad by trapping enemies inside bubbles and collecting heart squares and pearls.   Think for a while.  Okay, now stop thinking.  I bet you couldn't think of any answers, because it would take you a million years to.  Did you also know that Lolo and Lala became evil and got a castle that was in the way of Kirby, but then they became residents of Kappytown, added "fo" and "fa" to the beginning of there names, grew wings, and were said to be one?

I give the creativity: 10/10

Overall:

Lolo is a great game.  If you have a NES, get it NOW!!!

I give Adventures of Lolo: 10/10

Conclusion:

Lolo is AWESOOME!!!  HIS GAMES COMPARE TO MARIO'S GAMES!!!
