Game Name:
All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.
System:
Famicom Disk System
Genre:
Action / Sidescroller
Developer:
Vic Tokai, Inc.
Publisher:
Vic Tokai, Inc.
Release Date:
Japan: 1986

Introduction:

Hey guys! Since I'm back from Israel, here's a review for All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.

Like Kid Kool, All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. is an odd game.
Released in Japan shortly after the original Super Mario Bros., this game is weird, strange, and fun.
But what is weird about it? A WTF? Factor will be at the end.
What is All Night Nippon? That will be explained.
So get ready for a review!

Story:

Princess Toadstool has been captured by King Koopa, and his minions are taking over the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario, the bravest plumber must set out to rescue her.
Sound familiar? It is.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is EXACTLY like Super Mario Bros. Exactly.
It has levels from the Lost Levels for the Famicom and also levels from the original Super Mario Bros.
So on the World 1-1, you can find that little underground area with coins, a mushroom block is right at the beginning, etc. I don't know if the Minus World is there.
Jumps are the same, running, walking, kicking koopa shells, throwing fireballs, all of it is the same.
No differences here, if you've played Super Mario Bros. at all then you know what it's like.
(Sorry that it's not too long, but not much can be explained here.)
No improvements have been made as far as I can tell.

I give the gameplay: 9/10

Graphics:

I'd have to guess a bit better than the original.
A few of the graphics have been changed.
The ground is now gravel-like, like Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels for Famicom. (Yes there is one.) The clouds are smiling also. I'd give more detail, but I'll save that for the WTF? Factor at the end.

I give the graphics: 8/10

Sound:

The same as Super Mario Bros. The jumps, the pipes, the killing Goombas, the fireballs are all the same. Many things are the same here as in Super Mario Bros.

I give the sound: 7/10

Replayability:

You can do the same things, defeat King Koopa, rescue Toadstool, jump on Goombas, whatever. It's the same as the original.

I give the replayability: 10/10

Challenge:

It is a bit frustrating when Mario slides around, but that's the challenge. No harder than any other 2-d Mario game.

I give the challenge: 7/10

Frustration:

The frustration is Mario's sliding and how sometimes the enemies just go too fast or are in places inconvenient to you.

I give the frustration: 6/10

Value:

Hoo boy... this game is Japanese, so I'd have to put it in Yen, and I don't know how that goes with American dollars...

I give the value: ?/?

All Night Nippon:

All Night Nippon is (or at least was) a popular Japanese radio station in the 80's. I doubt it's still on the air today, but you never know... I think it was a comedy station and had skits or music... I just don't know.

WTF Factor:

Here it is! The WTF? Factor is now in session.
The sky is never blue. It is always night in the game, like All NIGHT Nippon.
Goombas and Piranha Plants are replaced with smiling faces with sunglasses, to resemble the cast of All Night Nippon. I forgot what koopas look like.
As far as I know, Mushrooms look different.
This game has several levels from the Lost Levels as well, and the textures are different for the ground and the sky.
At the title screen there is Japanese below the Super Mario Bros. logo. One can only guess that it translates to "All Night Nippon."

Overall:

A bit more than a simple remake, this game (I'm tired of typing the long name) You should try it, and if you're too weirded out, don't worry.

I give All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.: 910

Conclusion:

I'd recommend trying this crazy game. Some parts are in Japanese, but you can get by if you know English.
I think the makers of Nintendo were either smashed or high when they made this crazy game.
That's all, folks!
