  Game Name:
Axelay
System:
SNES
Genre:
Action
Developer/Publisher: Konami
Release Date:
United States: September 4th, 1992

Introduction:

"Kiss your Axelay goodbye." Shoot-em-up. This game was a hit on the SNES, and is a great game. It was a fresh take on  the side-scrolling, R-Type shoot-em-up-genre with it's innovative graphics and PURE FUN.

Story:

Well guess what, you're the only one who can save the galaxy! Armada of Annihilation is attacking and you gotta sit in your fighter, the axelay. Nothing special in the story, but forget that. It's always cool to save the world.

Gameplay:

Awesome, awesome. The fighter stays in control firmly and the controls are pretty quick to learn. There's different kinds of weapons, you get new one's after beating a level. You pick 3 weapons in the beginning of the level. The weapons have unique effects and have their own specialties. Controlling the weapons is easy, making the fighting really enjoyable.

I give the gameplay: 10/10

Graphics:

Here we get to the best part of the game; the graphics. This game has the all new take on the old side scroll; Every other level is from a different angle, kind of like upward/behind, 5th person mode, or something. It turns out to work REALLY well and gives a whole new way for the graphics to go. There's 6 levels, and levels 1, 3 and 5 are from the upward angle and 2, 4 and the final 6th level are from the classic side angle. The backgrounds are really beautiful, each level is truly unique. The bosses are AWESOME, this game has amazing end fights. When Axelay came out on the SNES, it was acclaimed by everybody, and especially for it's outlook.

I give the graphics: 10/10

Sound:

Good sounds. The weapons sound nice, the explosions are good. The music in the game is great, I think the tunes in each level rock and give a great atmosphere too.

I give the sound: 9/10

Replayability:

The pure gaming fun this game is makes you want to go back every now and then. And the extremely beautiful graphics. I've beaten this game several times and still play it. There's difficulty levels to choose from, so that's one aspect on the replay too.

I give the replayability: 9.5/10

Challenge:

This game isn't too easy. You have to be pretty quick and accurate and careful, as always in this type of games. The levels get harder steadily, and you'll have to study and memorize some of the stuff on them to survive. The bosses aren't too hard, but it's always a great battle. There could be a few more levels, but it's perfect for an hour or two of great gaming entertainment.

I give the challenge: 8.5/10

Value:

I think this game can be found quite easily. I got mine very cheap, and it has paid for itself several times over.

I give the value: 10/10

Overall:

A big enjoyment of a game, with awesome gameplay, incredible graphics, good tunes and awesome levels.

I give Axelay: 10/10

Conclusion:

A lot of people consider this as one of the classics. I won't argue a bit. Even if you don't normally like shoot-em-up games, I strongly recommend you give this game a try. Awesomeness.
