Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

Introduction

When I looked at the previous review written for this game, a thought that it was missing a lot. So, Tanooki Mario is at the rescue! (No offence to whoever wrote that last review) If you read my Super Mario Brothers Memory/Experience in the SMB Shrine, you’ll realize that this was the first game I ever owned and GB color was the first system I owned. I’ve put countless hours in this game. A game that gives you more than just 32 levels!

Story

Same as it’s always been: Bowser kidnapped Peach and Mario needs to rescue her by going through 32 levels filled with Goombas, Koopas, Buzzy Beetles, and much more.

Gameplay (10/10)

A tad different than original SMB for NES. First off, since the GB screen is much smaller than a T.V. screen ,you can scroll up, down, left, right, and middle. Huh? Well, I don’t really know what direction the middle is, but BIG WOOP. Remember when I said this game gives you more than 32 levels? I was REALLY telling the truth. The start off, if you get more than 300,000 points in Original mode, you unlock the JAPANESE version of SMB!! Sweet!

There’s also a Challenge mode in which you do the following in each of the Original 32 levels:

Find the 5 hidden red coins
Find the invisible block that contains a Yoshi egg (gives you 2000 pts)
Get over a set score in that level Example: in level 1-1 the set score is 32000. if you get more than that, you get the high score medal!

Also, there’s a meter that you must fill that contains your total score.

Another Example: say my highest score in world 3-2 is 100,335 and my total score is 1,047,436,000. NOW lets say a got a new record 100, 935 in 3-2. Well, since my High score increased by 600, my total score goes up by 600 and the meter goes up a bit. If you fill the meter, you get a Toad Award and if you get all Red coins, High Score medal, and Yoshi eggs, you get a Peach Award. I’ll tell you more about awards in a minute.

There’s also a VS mode in which 2 linked Gameboys can race in special race courses. Very exciting if you ask me.

If you get 100,000 points in Original mode, you get a YOU Vs BOO mode!
In this mode, you race the ghost, boo in different race courses than Vs mode. The faster your time is in the courses, the tougher it will be to beat boo because guess what? Boo’s time is equal to your BEST time of that Race World!! Boo will also change colors depending on how fst your best time is on any world.

Ah. the photo Album. This is kinda like your records. If you beat a certain enemy like a Koopa Troopa, a picture of that enemy is placed in your album and you can print that picture out if you have a GB printer. Remember the Awards I mentioned earlier? You get them by doing various things in the Game.

Beat Original 32 levels: Mario Award
Beat Original 32 levels in “a harder quest” Bowser award.
Beat Japanese version of SMB: Yoshi Award
I already explained the other two.

You can also get pictures for:

Finding a 1up Mushroom
Get fireworks,
Find a vine….
You get the idea.

Last and least there’s……i mean but not least we come to the Toy box. This includes this weird fortune telling thing, a calendar (what the heck is that there for?) Random, printable pictures of Mario characters, Nintendo logos, items, pipes, lots of stuff. Also, we have Yoshi. Once you find 1 Yoshi egg on your own, he appears here. He selects a random world and shows you a screenshot of that world. This is the general area of that yoshi eggs invisible block.

I LOVE the Gameplay!

Graphics (8/10)

Same as NES Version. Not much to say. But I do like the title screen!

Sound (8/10)

Same as NES again. But the Main Menu music, and other music throughout other things is pretty good.

Replayability

Well, since you can’t delete any thing, you can’t really replay it. But you know how it is playing the Original 32 levels over and over again.

Challenge (9/10)

Well since there’s a mode actually called challenge, you’d think it’s be hard, right? Well it IS hard. Only a couple of years ago did I complete the Challenge mode. But we all know what the rest is like.

Frustration (9/10)

VERY frustrating!

Value (9/10)

I have no idea what this game is worth because I got for a Christmas present. But I’ve seen I for about $10 at stores which is pretty good for a Mario game.

Overall (10/10)

This is a game that defines SMB by adding a bunch of new stuff. Which I think is an awesome idea.

Conclusion

Dude, just writing this review has brought back memories for me! An awesome game.
