Introduction:
I picked up my Wii on November 19th, and since then I've been
having the time of my life with Nintendo's new console. Although not
every game for it is great, each takes advantage of the Wii-mote and
Nunchuk' S capabilities is a unique, innovative way. The game that
every Wii owner has and loves is Wii Sports, a showcase of the
console's capabilities and a very fun game that turns your Wii-mote
into a tennis racquet, baseball bat, a golf club and boxing gloves.
Each of the five sports featured in Wii Sports, tennis, baseball,
bowling, golf and boxing are a ton of fun by yourself or with your
friends that never get tiresome and you can come back to them over and
over again. Wii Sports proves that the Wii is a system that almost
everyone, if not everyone, should enjoy.
Story:
No story in this game.
Gameplay:
What more can I say? Wii Sports is an amazingly fun game!
Each of the five games are so intuitive that you actually feel like
you're in the game. In tennis, you have no control over your Mii. You
merely serve by raising the Wii-mote and bringing it down, and timing
your forehand and back hand swings correctly. Tennis is without a
doubt the simplest and most fun of the five games, as it is amazingly
responsive and fun to play by yourself and even more fun to play with
your friends.
Baseball is one of the more difficult games. When you're up to bat,
you must time your swing correctly for a homer, and it feels good to
pull off a homerun. once you hit the ball, all the action on the field
is controlled by the AI, which adds to the simplicity of the game
making it a more relaxed experience. To pitch, you swing the Wii-mote
down and watch as it is either a ball or a strike. You can do
different pitches with different button combinations which is the
strategic part of Baseball. Doing different motions for different
pitches would've been acceptable, but the button combinations work and
I have no real complaints. Baseball can be played with two people and
is more enjoyable that way, it is a great part of Wii Sports.
Bowling is enjoyable. You can set the angle of your shot and
position yourself before you let go of the ball, and by tilting the
Wii-mote you can put spin on the ball. This is one of the deeper
sports in Wii Sports, and is certainly the most difficult. It takes
skill to reach pro status in bowling, and you'll find yourself trying
to attain it no matter what. Bowling never gets old and can be played
with up to four people, which makes this a great party game.
Then there is golf. Golf takes precision and fluent motions if you
want to get that ball in the hole as soon as you can. You have a
choice of a beginner, intermediate or expert 3-hole game, or you can
do a 9-hole game. You have to make sure you don't put to much power
into your shot as it will probably go out of bounds. You also have to
pay attention to where you are going to hit the ball and how strong
the wind is. Definitely a fun, strategic part of Wii Sports that is a
great single player game and multiplayer game.
Last, but not least, is boxing. This is the only game that requires
the nunchuk controller to serve as your other fist. Boxing is the
deepest of the five, as there are many different computer opponents
and combos to pull of. You can put the Wii-mote/Nunchuk in front of
your face to block your face, and put the controllers in front of your
torso to block your stomach. You swing the controllers to punch and
lean your body to the left or right to dodge. This is a very, very fun
game, but it can also be unresponsive and downright frustrating as
your movements will not always be recognized, so if this happens
you're going to lose. This is a much more fun multiplayer game than
single player. Beating the crap out of your friend is very satisfying.
Boxing is great.
Training and Fitness are the other two things to do in Wii sports. In
Training, each sport has three different challenges in which you can
achieve medals. For example, in tennis, you must hit all the balls
back to the person who served them to you, and they must land in the
court. In bowling, you have to try to hit 100 pins with a power throw.
In boxing, you have to dodge the balls your trainer throws at you.
Training is very engaging and getting platinum in every challenge is
very hard, making you want to keep coming back until you beat every
challenge. Fitness throws several different challenges at you, and
based on how your performance is, you'll be told how your fitness age
is. This is more for adults than children though.
Wii Sports is an excellent showcase for the Wii and the gameplay is
incredible.
I give the gameplay: 9.0/10
Graphics:
The graphics in this game are simple and colourful, which is
perfectly okay. Honestly, this isn't the kind of game that needs to
have crisp visuals and a realistic feel. The cartoony theme is what
this game needs. No complaints about the graphics.
I give the graphics: 7.0/10
Sound:
The Wii's internal speaker does a lot in this game. When you swing
your Wii-mote, the sound won't come from your TV but your remote. The
different sounds suit the different sports. In boxing it's loud and
engaging and in golf it's quiet and peaceful.
I give the sound: 8.0/10
Replayability:
This game will last a while, trying to get all the
platinum medals in Wii training is difficult and none of the sports
get old. Multiplayer is really what keeps this game going though, as
having a good time playing Wii with your friends never grows tiresome.
Challenge:
When you reach pro status, the AI becomes harder and harder. This
game never gets too hard though, this is a nice relaxing game that
wasn't meant to be very challenging.
I give the challenge: 6.0/10
Frustration:
None to be had, unless your friend is kicking your a**.
I give the challenge: 1.0/10
Value:
It's free! And it's fun! Yay!
I give the value: 10/10
Overall:
Wii Sports may not be deep and challenging like Zelda, but it
proves that the Wii is for everybody, and Nintendo wants people to
know that having a good time is much more important than graphics.
This game is a great time with friends and never gets old. Wii Sports
is a pick and play game that anyone can play, gamers and non-gamers
alike.
I give Wii Sports: 8.5/10
Conclusion:
Wii Sports is an great game that's accessible to anyone and
everyone, anyone who plays this shouldn't be disappointed. This game
shows what the Wii can do, and I love it.
