Mushroom Retainers:


Mushroom Retainers are commonly called Toad. Which is untrue. There are seven Mushroom Retainers in total. One at the end of the first seven castles.
They are Mushrooms who originally served in the court of Princess Toadstool, but went under Bowser's spell. (Until you save them of course:)

Princess Toadstool:

Princess Toadstool is your goal throughout the game. You need to defeat Bowser to save her. She is the daughter of the Mushroom King, and is the only one who can undo the evil magic spell Bowser has cast upon the Mushroom Kingdom.

Luigi:

Luigi is Mario's Brother. His last name, as well as Mario's is Mario. So hence the name of the game Super Mario Bros.
Luigi plays the exact same way as Mario, the only difference is Luigi is 2nd player and is green when small and big. But Luigi and Mario Look identical once they have a fire flower.

Mario:


Mario, the older or the two brothers (and most definitely the one that gets all the fame.) What do you expect when someone will play as him on a 1 or 2 player game. Mario just heard of the Mushroom Kingdoms troubles and decided to selflessly help. In his regular form he is small and if hit once will die. But if he receives a Magic Mushroom it will take 2 hits to die. The same goes for Luigi.
